My objections to the ‘designer baby’ idea and others like it aren’t ethical at all, but rather rooted in science. My fear is that if people are able to genetically engineer every detail about their child, this will lead to a homogenizing of the gene pool. I have a hard time believing that if given this choice, most people wouldn’t design incredibly similar babies, thanks to societal norms surrounding whats attractive or desirable in another person. Genetic variation is a protective factor, and once we lose that, who knows what will happen to us as a species.
Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the
shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic
but I had to tell someone!
